Maryland Materials, Inc. must blast the bedrock to make it small enough to fit into our
crushers. Blasting the rock shakes the ground, so we have our own seismograph
to measure the vibration (www.geosonics.com).
- We use the seismograph to monitor every blast
- If we do get a complaint, we ask if we can monitor the next blast from the neighbor's
yard.
- We establish communication with the neighbor.
- We discuss the reason for the vibrations and noise and their effect on homes.
- We ask the neighbor to call again if they feel a vibration is too great.
- We mapped vibration and noise effects over a one-mile radius from the center of the
quarry
- We assisted Vibra-tech (www.Vibra-Tech-inc.com), a ground vibration specialty firm, in
placing 160 seismographs.
- They simultaneously monitored four blasts.
- Vibra-tech then mapped the resulting effects on the ground.
- We then met with the neighbors to discuss the findings.
- We changed our blasting practices to reduce our impact on
neighbors as a result of this study.
- Everyone is welcome to visit us to see the maps.

These efforts aid us in minimizing our effect on the
surrounding community, because we care about our neighbors.
