ROCKS SHINE IN THE NEW SMITHSONIAN EXHIBIT

There's a spotlight shining on the aggregate, paving, and construction industries at an exciting new exhibit hall at the Smithsonian Institution in
Washington, D.C.

"The Rocks Gallery," which opened at the National Museum of Natural History in November, is giving visitors a new appreciation for and an understanding of the importance of aggregates and aggregate products such as Hot Mix Asphalt to everyday life.

A focal point of the Gallery is an interactive display, "Rocks Build Cities," which explores how aggregates are used not only in our building and roads, but also in manufacturing applications as diverse as glass and computers.

The Gallery, which is supported by the National Stone Association and the Rocks Build America Foundation, takes full advantage of its large window looking out at the National Gallery of Art and the Capitol.

Maryland Materials Inc. donated granite and money to support this exhibit. You can visit their website at www.mnh.si.edu/exhibits.html.

The beautiful view from the window gives a clear view of how the use of stone has helped shape and enhance our lives.

Education is clearly the goal of the Gallery, and the exhibit helps support the objectives of the national science curriculum for middle school students. The Gallery has already hosted several Electronic Classrooms, linking museum scientists and students in schools through the U.S. and around the world via satellite, and more are planned.
