Charles Petrillo James Julian In the late 1950s, Mr. Charles Petrillo and Mr. James Julian decided to find a site where they could produce aggregate for their concrete and construction businesses. In 1958, clearing and stripping began on an old farm in rural Cecil County, Maryland. It took two years to ready the site and erect the crushing and screening plant. Production began in February of 1960. In our first year we produced 276,659 tons of aggregate. Quarrying was hard work and finding the right equipment to crush and process the deposit of hard Metamorphic Gneiss was difficult. Trial and error fine-tuned the process. In 1962, construction began on Interstate 95, on the northern boundary of the property. The quarry doubled production by running two shifts in order to keep up with the demand. Also, two Hot Mix Asphalt plants were erected on the property for the highway project. After I-95 was completed, our company began its progression of growth and customer loyalty that is still with us today. Major upgrades of the plant equipment occurred in 1980, 1986, and 1996. In 1996, we opened a railcar loading facility on CSXs mainline that has enlarged our market coverage and positioned us as a major east coast aggregate supplier. Maryland Materials, Inc. is now one of the largest crushed stone producers in the state of Maryland. Our company ranks in the top 11% of the U.S. crushed stone operations; that 11% accounts for 34% of total U.S. production.
